PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who work as laboratory assistants and learners in museums who do not have formal qualifications and who have access to digital and drawing equipment.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the conventions of drawing artefacts and archaeological features.
  • Demonstrating different scaling techniques.
  • Illustrating artefacts and archaeological features.
  • Photographing artefacts.
  • Archiving site records. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is recommended that learners should be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard is for learners working under supervision as assistants in archives, museums and laboratories where artefacts are stored.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the conventions for drawing artefacts and archaeological features. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Conventions for drawing artefacts are described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Conventions include, but are not limited to, shading, colour, surface texture, decoration, plan and site views, cross sections and scale.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Conventions for representing archaeological plans and sections are described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Plans and sections include, but are not limited to, floor plans, section plans, stratigraphic sections, conventions for colour, texture, position of special finds, vertical and horizontal scale, orientation, location in section within the site and the key.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate different scaling techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The concept of scale is explained and an appropriate scale is selected for the amount of detail. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An artefact is drawn to an appropriate scale. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Problems that can occur if the scale is incorrect or omitted are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Techniques for up-scaling and down-scaling drawings and plans are demonstrated for a range of artefacts of different sizes. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Illustrate artefacts and archaeological features.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate materials, tools and techniques are used to illustrate a range of artefacts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Art tools are cleaned and stored appropriately. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Photograph artefacts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different types of camera are compared in terms of their appropriateness for a specific task. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Comparison includes single reflex lens, lenses, aperture, pixels, tripods, flash, external light source.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The basic principles of photography are explained with reference to the photographing of artefacts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principles include film type, lighting and film speed.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Depth of field is explained with reference to focus. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Artefacts are photographed using different apertures, background lighting and distances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Photographs of artefacts are analysed in terms of photographic error and suggestions are made to correct future error.

    Photographs and drawings are labelled for efficient retrieval.

    The implications of technology for archive systems are discussed with reference to a specific archive.
