PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended to allow for specialisation for learners who work as field assistants on archaeological sites or as laboratory assistants in museums or universities. It should allow learners to engage with issues and to understand the finer details of Colonial sites thereby becoming better excavators.It should be useful for recreational archaeologists and learners on excavation sites who assist with excavations following set procedures and who do not have formal qualifications.It may also be useful for people doing cultural resources management (CRM)

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Outlining the history of Colonial expansion.
  • Explaining changes in structural features, spatial patterns and artefacts on Colonial sites over time.
  • Using artefacts to date a Colonial site.
  • Explaining what archaeology contributes to knowledge of the Colonial period. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is recommended that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard is for learners working under supervision as assistants on Colonial sites.Colonial sites refer to the period from the first European contacts to the early 20th Century.

    Outline the history of Colonial expansion.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Colonial expansion in Southern Africa is outlined with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The impact of Colonial material culture on Southern Africa is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different types of Colonial settlement are described with reference to function. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Settlements include military forts, rural farming settlements, industrial settlements and towns.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain changes in structural features, spatial patterns and artefacts on Colonial sites over time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Items and features found on Colonial sites are used to classify and explain sites according to spatial patterning, artefacts, structures, layout, function and period. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Sites include, but are not limited to, military, industrial sites,Colonial settlements, burial grounds, and farm sites.
  • Industrial sites include factories, mines, gasworks, quarries, harbours,mills, roads and irrigation systems.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Changes in a selected category of Colonial sites over time are explained with reference to spatial patterning and structures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Changes to a structure over time are identified from building fabric and layout. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Changes include the First War of Independence, the South African War, changes to Iron Age sites and modifications to Colonial structures.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Use artefacts to date a Colonial site.

    Key features of artefacts are used to describe function, period and origin. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Artefacts include, but are not limited to, bottles, pipe stems, pipe bowls, decoration on ceramics and porcelain, cartridges, cartridge cases, buttons, buckles, tin cans, linoleum, toys, wall paper and wall paintings.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Artefacts from different colonial periods are classified according to age and origin. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The characteristics of primary and secondary disposal are explained with reference to dumping. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain what archaeologists contribute to knowledge of the Colonial period.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Ways in which archaeologists contribute to knowledge of the Colonial period are explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Contributions to knowledge include, but are not limited to, knowledge about the activities of slaves, common soldiers and common people, oral history and undocumented history.

    Examples of where archaeological finds support or contradict written sources are described with examples.
