PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners wishing to acquire the competencies of this unit standard will be domestic workers, au pairs, baby-sitters, in-home child-minders working towards a national qualification and/or will be involved in minding children. Qualifying learners are able to provide a safe and secure environment for the pre-school child.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Providing general indoor safety and security for toddlers
  • Implementing measures to prevent choking, strangulation and suffocation of the child
  • Ensuring safety in and around the swimming pool
  • Ensuring safety in and around the car 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • The learner would have achieved numeracy and communication competencies at a minimum level of ABET level 2 or the equivalent.
  • This will enable the learner to confirm the knowledge and skills required by this unit standard. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Pre-school refers to a child 3 to 5 years of age
  • Safety measures in the play park refer to e.g. ensuring the toddler is not dressed in loose clothes, keeping to special areas for young children, checking that shoes are non- slippery, checking that play equipment is stable, not allowing sand to be thrown in the sand pit and checking that the sand pit is not too shallow
  • Safety measures in and around the swimming pool refer to not allowing swimming during thunder storms, keeping swimming times short, ensuring that the gate of the swimming pool is locked at all times, not allowing running around the swimming pool and ensuring that the child wear personal flotation devices
  • Safety measures in and around the car refer to e.g. not leaving the child unattended in the car, ensuring that child locks are secure, checking that windows are closed, fastening seat belts and not allowing the child to sit in the front of the car
  • Safety measures regarding clothes refer to e.g. the child wearing clothes without drawstrings, not wearing loose clothes and removing sweatshirts 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Provide general indoor safety and security for toddlers. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    General safety refers to e.g. safe positioning of kitchenware, string chemicals safely, not decantering chemicals into cold drink bottle, removing loose carpets, attaching safety sockets, covering sharp corners of furniture, storing sharp objects out of reach and not leaving the toddler alone in bathroom. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The home environment of the toddler is assessed by identifying potential hazards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons why the location of the toddler needs to be known and the activities of the toddler supervised at all time is explained with consequences of not knowing and supervising. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety measures to protect toddlers from scalds and burns are explained with examples of each safety measure. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Implement measures to prevent choking, strangulation and suffocation of the child. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Objects that can cause choking and/ or suffocation are identified by pointing them out and are removed from the child environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons why the child must play with age- appropriate toys only is explained with examples of age appropriate toys. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons why the child must be taught that plastic bags should not be put over their heads is explained with the consequences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Measures that need to be put in place to ensure that no trailing wires / cords could wrap around the toddler's neck are explained with examples of each measure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The reasons why all draw strings must be removed from the clothes of the child is explained with consequences of not doing so. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Ensure safety in and around the swimming pool.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety measures to be implemented in and around the swimming pool are explained with examples of each safety measures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reason(s) why the employer/ parent should be urged to provide swimming lessons for the child- minder and child is explained, with example of the consequences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of constant adult supervision at the swimming pool is explained with the consequences of not supervising constantly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reason(s) why the child- minder needs to be skilled in cardiopulmonary resuscitation is explained with the consequences of not being able to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Ensure safety in and around the car.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The safety measures that need to be implemented are explained with examples of each measure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of checking that the child is not present in the drive way when vehicles are in transit is explained with consequences of not checking. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The dangers of putting the child in the same safety belt with another person are explained with examples of consequences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reason(s) for constant adult supervision of the child in and around vehicles is explained with the consequences on not proving constant supervision. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Ensure safety in the play park.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety measures to be implemented when visiting the play park with the pre- school child are explained with examples of each measure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The requirements for a safe slide and swing are explained with examples of the requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reason(s) why the child should be guided to understand his/ her limitations in the play park is explained with consequences of each reason. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reason(s) why constant adult supervision in the play park is important is explained with consequences on not providing constant supervision at a play park. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The required safety measures are put in place for each activity undertaken.

  • Any institution or provider offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
