PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners wishing to acquire the competencies of this unit standard will be domestic workers, au pairs, baby-sitters, in-home child-minders working towards a national qualification and/ or will be involved in minding children. Qualifying learners are able to provide basic health care for babies.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Administering medication to a baby, toddlers and pre-school child
  • Identifying possible health problems for babies, toddlers and pre-school child and provide treatment
  • Managing emergency health situations
  • Taking the temperature of the baby, toddlers and pre-school child
  • Performing the post administering medication and treatment procedures

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The learner would have achieved numeracy and communication competencies at a minimum level of ABET level 2 or the equivalent. This will enable the learner to confirm the knowledge and skills required by this unit standard. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The scope of this unit standard is for any person who needs to provide health care for babies in a domestic, home- care and/ or child minding environment
  • The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process is limited in range, very repetitive and familiar, no generation of new ideas is needed and the person has no responsibility for the learning of others
  • In the context of this unit standards health care is provided for babies in a domestic, home- care and/ or child minding in home environment
  • Baby refers to a child 0 to 18 months of age
  • Equipment to administer medicine refers to e.g. liquid medicine, eye drops, ear drops, nose drops, eye dropper, ear dropper, nose dropper, dinky feeder, medicine spoon, bib, cotton wool and tissues
  • Symptoms refer to e.g. runny tummy, bright red spots on the skin of the baby over the nappy area, severe pain in the stomach, white, and spots on the top and / or sides of the tongue, higher temperature than normal and choking
  • Position refers the different positions of the baby when e.g. liquid medicine is administered, eye drops/ ointment applied, eardrops inserted and nose drops inserted
  • Method refers to the armpit and the rectum methods
  • Post activity performance refers to e.g. storing all equipment in a safe place, ensuring and monitoring the comfort of the baby and reporting progress and/ or irregularities to the employer/ parent
  • Prescribed way refers to e.g. the instructions of the employer/ parent and/ or the medical practitioner
  • Symptoms of choking refer to e.g. the baby spluttering, coughing, and gasping for breath, blueness around the lips and unconsciousness
  • Equipment to take the temperature refers to e.g. the thermometer, cotton wool, disinfecting chemical, cotton wool, gloves, towel and petroleum

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Administer medication to a baby, toddlers and pre-school child. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hands are washed before administering medication and the selected equipment prepared according to the type of medication to be administered / to administer the medication. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The baby, toddler and pre-school child is placed in the correct position and the reasons for the preferred position given with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The medication is administered according to the selected method and instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Steps are explained that could be implemented should the baby, toddlers and pre-school chills refuse to take the liquid medicine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The symptoms of choking are given and suitable actions to stop the choking are explained with example. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify possible health problems for babies, toddlers and pre-school child and provide treatment. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Health problems refer to e.g. breathing problems, sore throat, common colds, constipation, croup, runny tummy, nappy rash, cutting teeth, middle ear infection, constipation, stomach ache, colic, vomiting, fever and ear ache. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The health problem of the baby, toddlers and pre-school child is identified according to different symptoms and reported to the employer/ parent in accordance with requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Hands are washed and the equipment necessary for the treatment of an ailment is prepared according to type of ailment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The baby, toddlers and pre-school child is comforted and the health problem/ ailment are treated in the prescribed way. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not treating runny tummy immediately are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The reasons are given why anxiety should not be shown while treatment is provided to the toddler suffering from a breathing problem. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The reason(s) why ailments or treatments need to be reported to the employer/ parent is explained with consequences of not reporting. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Manage emergency health situations. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Emergency health situations refer to e.g. poisoning, burns foreign body in the eye, cuts and grazes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The emergency health condition and the possible causes are identified and removed if possible. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons why the condition of the child needs to be reported to the employer / patent is explained with consequences of not reporting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The symptoms of different emergency health conditions are named and the treatment of these conditions explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The way to determine the seriousness of a cut wound is identified and explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The way to determine the treatment of the cut wound is identified and explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Take the temperature of the baby, toddler and pre-school child. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hands are washed before taking temperature and the appropriate method is selected to take the temperature of the baby, toddler and pre-school child. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The way to prepare the thermometer and baby, toddler and pre-school child is explained with reasons for the procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The baby, toddler and pre-school child is prepared for the process of thermometer / temperature taking according to specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The temperature is taken using the appropriate method. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The reasons why progress and or irregularities need to be reported to the employer / parent is explained with consequences of not reporting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    What to do in an emergency is explained with examples and the emergency telephone number for the doctors, poison hotline and parents at work is given in a list. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Perform the post treatment procedures.

    Equipment used to treat the infectious disease and emergency health condition is stored manufactures and safety precaution requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The comfort of the baby, toddler and pre-school child is ensured and monitored according to procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Progress and / or irregularities are reported to the employer / parents and explained with consequences of not reporting.
