PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners wishing to acquire the competencies of this unit standard will be domestic workers, au pairs, baby-sitters, in-home child-minders working towards a national qualification and/or will be involved in minding children. Qualifying learners are able to practice hygiene principles for toddlers.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing for potty training
  • Potty training the toddlers
  • Performing the post potty training procedures 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • The learner would have achieved numeracy and communication competencies at a minimum level of ABET level 2 or the equivalent.
  • This will enable the learner to confirm the knowledge and skills required by this unit standard. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Toddler refers to a child 18 months to 3 years of age
  • Equipment refers to e.g. a potty, toilet, pants, trainer pant, toys, books, plastic cover for the floor, soap and a towel
  • Correct process refers to e.g. explaining and/ or demonstrating to the toddler what needs to be done, encouraging the toddler to sit down on potty, not forcing the toddler to sit down or stay on the potty
  • Appropriate clothing refer to e.g. training pants with a waterproof lining and/ or towelling inside, ordinary cotton pants, tracksuit pants and clothes that can be removed easily

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare for potty training. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Potty refers to e.g. a round plastic/ metal container, colorful, with a flat rigid base, without rough edges and with a splashguard for boys. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The readiness of the toddler to be potty trained is assessed in accordance with criteria for readiness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The selected equipment for potty training is prepared in according to household instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Activities to create the correct environment, are explained with examples of these activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The toddler is dressed in the appropriate clothing for potty training activities. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Potty train the toddler. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct process to introduce potty training to the toddler is implemented, according to household instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The comfort of the toddler is monitored throughout the potty training process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The successful efforts of the toddler are handled according to best practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The unsuccessful efforts of the toddler are handled according to best practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The difference in training a boy and a girl toddler is explained with examples of the difference. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform the post potty training procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The toddler is assisted to wash hands after each potting training session and the reason explained with an example. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The potty is disinfected according to instruction and stored in a place accessible to the toddler. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Progress and/ or irregularities are reported to the employer/ parent according to requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reason(s) why progress/ and or irregularities need to be reported to the employer/ parent are explained with consequences of not reporting.

  • Any institution or provider offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    In order to contribute to the full personal development of each learner and the social and economic development of society at large, it must be the intention underlying any programme of learning to make an individual aware of the importance of being culturally and aesthetically sensitive across a range of social context while potty training the toddler.
