PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for line managers and human resources management practitioners who are involved in managing careers of individuals (subordinates). Persons credited with this unit standard are able to gather and analyse information for individual career planning, facilitate and manage the career planning process and monitor individual career progress. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this standard are able to:
  • analyse the organisational environment
  • gather and use information relevant to managing individual careers
  • apply basic negotiation, interviewing and interpersonal skills
  • interpret relevant legislation.

    1. Career planning tools and assessment instruments are relevant, valid and utilised effectively to gather information about the individual. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tools and assessment instruments may include but are not limited to information about abilities, values, technical skills and competencies; career anchors; career phases; lifestyle preferences; performance information; individual needs and interests; and assessment centre information.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Information gathered is analysed to identify and develop an individual profile. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    An individual profile may include but is not limited to information about abilities, values, technical skills and competencies, career anchors, career phases, lifestyle preferences, performance information, individual needs and interests and assessment centre information.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Relevant information about organisational goals, strategies and needs are gathered to facilitate individual career planning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Individual and organisational information is integrated and analysed to compile an individual career profile.

    1. Career goals are formulated based on individual career profiles clearly specifying actions, accountability, time frames and complies with organisational and legislative requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Career advancement strategies are identified to facilitate attainment of career goals. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The strategies may include but are not limited to training and development interventions, self-empowerment, networking and mentorship.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Individual development plans applicable in performance management are linked to career goals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Career planning discussions are documented for reference purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Career planning discussion is constructive, participative, tactful, honest and respectful. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Career plan is produced and made available to relevant parties for career management purposes in line with organisational objectives and legislative requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Parties may include but are not limited to the employees, team, supervisor, manager, shop steward or human resources.

    1. Career progress is evaluated against specific actions and timeframes indicated in career plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Career guidance discussion is held to affirm progress, revise or identify new career goals and to suggest corrective action. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Career guidance discussion is constructive and participative with due consideration to sensitivity, honesty and respect.

    4. Career guidance discussion is documented for reference purposes. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.

    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    4. Therefore, anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
