PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard has been developed for the surveying occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement within social and economic transformation by gaining surveying skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able to reduce basic distance measurements (tape or Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM)) for use in Surveying.

A qualifying learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge related to instruments used for distance measurement in surveying.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the theory and principles associated with distance measurement for the use in surveying.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the principles associated with distance reduction to survey datum.
  • Reduce basic distance measurements in accordance with survey standards.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
NQF level 4, and numeracy and literacy that will facilitate better understanding and proficiency in this unit standard.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate basic knowledge related to instruments used for distance measurement in surveying.

    Tape

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Relevant corrections are applied to distance measurements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Distance measurements are reduced for slope, datum, and scale.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA and registered with FE / HE registrar.
