PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard in combination with context expertise standard(s) will be able to manage and maintain a water / wastewater reticulation network. This competence will enable the learner to plan, manage and maintain the water / wastewater reticulation system. This competence will contribute towards the efficient provision of water provision / wastewater removal from customers. Achieving this unit standard will enhance the efficiency of the qualifying learner as a manager and advance his / her own expertise and employability in the water sector.

    The implementation of programmes for identifying water loss / storm water ingress into the system is monitored.

    Anomalies (field discrepancies) in the system are identified and plans implemented to overcome these.

    New installations are managed in accordance with work plan, discrepancies are noted and appropriate action is taken.

    The use of alternative materials / methods for reticulation and its maintenance is monitored and feedback / input is provided to senior management.

    Technical advice and solutions are provided in areas where subordinate staff are unable to solve specific problems.

    Monitoring of pumping systems by means of telemetry or physical checks are arranged, problems are identified and appropriate action is taken.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES 
    Wastewater reticulation in this context refers to the wastewater network system installed for the conveyance of wastewater from a consumer's property through the wastewater network to a purification works and allows for the discharge of acceptable quality wastewater.

    When conducting assessments, assessors must ensure that they are familiar with the full text of the unit standards being assessed. Assessors must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge by developing assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the learners are working. These activities and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment. It may be more effective and efficient to assess a number of unit standards together in an integrated way, thus reducing the overall number of assessments and ensuring that commonalities that exist between a number of unit standards are captured in a way that makes sense for assessment.
