PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people who have to solve operational problems in a familiar context in a manufacturing and/or assembly process.

Qualifying learners are able to identify and analyse the problem, identify possible solutions and implement a solution to meet operational requirements.

The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in Manufacturing Supervision (NQF level 4) and related qualifications.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for people who supervise individuals and team activities in manufacturing and/or assembly processes.

The credits allocated to this unit standard assume that learners have little or no experience in solving basic problems when starting to learn towards competency in this unit standard.

It is further assumed that learners are able to:

Communicate effectively at NQF level 3.

Apply principles of policy and procedure implementation at NQF level 3.

Demonstrate an understanding of the organisation and its functions in which problems are to be solved and decisions made at NQF level 3.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

The ranges as indicated under the specific outcomes determine the scope and level of this unit standard.

The learner should be able to work autonomously.

Define and analyse the operational problem.

OUTCOME RANGE

Operational problems includes resource and timing constraints, accuracy of work and material supply to manufacturing / assembly process.

Results achieved:

1. Problems are resolved.
2. Recurrence of problem is minimised.

Indicators:

1. A statement of the apparent problem is made.
2. Sufficient information is obtained to verify the problem, and assumptions are recorded.
3. The root cause of the problem is identified and a statement of the real problem is made.
4. A range of possible solutions is identified that would address the root cause of the problem and prevent recurrence.
5. Possible solutions to the problem are identified using a range of problem solving techniques.
6. Criteria for evaluating solutions are established to match the type of problem.
7. Each alternative is examined to verify that it will solve the real problem as well as the apparent problem.
8. Possible solutions are evaluated against identified criteria and the one selected that best meet the criteria.
9. Effectiveness of the solution is improved by a pilot run where possible.
10. Solutions are reviewed and modified.
11. Final solutions are developed in consultation with stakeholders.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

The assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of the relevant Education and Training Quality Assuror who has jurisdiction over this field of learning. The assessor will (at the very least) be accredited and have a technical qualification in this learning area.

The learner can be assessed in the language of his/her choice although s/he has to report incidents or conditions to someone else. The learner will be assessed on his/her ability to report in the language commonly used in his/her working environment.

The learner will be assessed in the workplace but s/he can submit documents, projects, test results and assignments that were not produced in the workplace.
The learner can be assessed against this unit standard to obtain credits or as part of an integrated assessment for a qualification.
