PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who are working within the medical pathology or blood transfusion fields. Safety is the cornerstone of all facets in the preventive, curative and promotive health field. The qualifying learner will be able, through knowledge, skills and attitude, to work safely within the medical field thus enhancing health care delivery and economic transformation

Qualifying learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Understand how to keep the working environment safe
  • Know what they are required to do in the event of an accident
  • Understand the spread of infections and diseases and the types of infection control procedures commonly used
  • Safely handle the chemicals and equipment used in the course of their duties

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Language and communication skills at or equivalent to NQF level 3

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The prescribed protocols referred to in this unit standard are the written instructions relating to specific tasks and procedures of the institution where the learner is currently employed.

    The working environment is kept clean and tidy according to prescribed protocol

    Potential hazards in the work area are recognised and reported according to the prescribed protocol and relevant legislation

    International safety symbols common to the working environment are accurately identified 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Knowledge of the premises and housekeeping prescribed protocol is demonstrated orally or in writing 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    React appropriately in the event of an accident. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The location of safety equipment is identified. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety procedures include but are not limited to eye wash bottles, first aid box, shower, fire hose, fire extinguisher, safety blanket, gas and electricity mains.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Knowledge of the use of the safety equipment is demonstrated orally, in writing and/or through simulation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Knowledge of the prescribed protocol relating to safety procedures and reporting structures is demonstrated orally or in writing. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety procedures include but are not limited to evacuation procedures, handling of chemical spills, accidents and accidental exposure to blood borne pathogens (needle stick injuries).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Protocol for reporting and recording all incidents/accidents is demonstrated orally or in writing.

    Prevent the spread of infection and disease in the working environment.

    Gasses used in the working environment are stored and used according to prescribed protocol, legislation and safety requirements.
