PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners wishing to acquire the competencies of this standard will be voluntary community workers, domestic workers and /or will be involved in a pet care environment. Qualifying learners are able to feed a pet in accordance with best practices in pet care.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining pet feeding in a home environment
  • Preparing for feeding the pet
  • Feeding and providing water for the pet
  • Explaining and conducting end of feed procedures

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The learner would have achieved numeracy and communication competencies at a minimum level of ABET level 2 or the equivalent. This will enable the learner to confirm the knowledge and skills required by this unit standard. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Pets refer to common household pets, such as dogs, cats, rodents including hamsters, birds and fish.
  • Feeding needs of pets include feeding frequency, quantity and may include commercial and home -made pet food.
  • Watering needs refer to the amount of water the freshness of the water and how often it is provided.
  • Commercial Pet Food refer to branded pet food package for different kinds and sizes of pets.
  • Homemade Pet Food refers to food prepared, cooked or raw as allocated and prescribed by the household.
  • Specific food for a specific pet refers to dog food for dogs, cat food for cats, hamster food for hamsters.
  • Seasonal changes refer to protecting food and water from freezing temperatures in winter or direct sunlight in summer.
  • Foods not suitable to pets refer to chocolate, sweets, chicken bones for dogs, alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, human pills and medication.
  • Different eating behaviour refers to not eating, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, choking.

    Explain pet feeding in a home environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The dedicated containers which are used to feed the pet are identified according to suitability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons for using dedicated, clean suitable containers for the pet is explained with examples of the consequences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The differences between commercial and home-made pet food is identified by examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare for feeding the pet.

    The correct amount of food per feed is measured according to feed requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons for not overfeeding and or underfeeding pets are explained with examples of the consequences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reason(s) for feeding the pet at times prescribed by the household is explained with examples of the consequences. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Feed and provide water for the pet.

    The reason(s) for selecting a suitable location for feeding the pet is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct conditions under which the pet is fed are explained with examples.

    The reason(s) for taking seasonal changes into consideration when feeding a pet is explained in line with pet feeding requirements.

    The reason for supplying clean fresh water is explained with reference to health requirements.

    Explain and conduct end of feed procedures.

    The preventative measures that can be taken to prevent ants and other insects from infesting the food are demonstrated with practical examples.

    Foods not suitable for pets are listed and the reasons explained why they are to suitable.

    The reason(s) why humans and pets eat different foods is explained with examples.

  • Any institution or provider offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be a registered assessor with the relevant competence at NQF level 2.
