PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners wishing to acquire the competencies of this unit standard will be domestic workers, au pairs, baby- sitters, in- home child- minders working towards a national qualification and/or will be involved in minding children. Qualifying learners are able to provide a safe and secure environment for babies in and around the home.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Implementing safety measures for babies during daily feeding activities
  • Implementing safety measures for babies during daily routine activities
  • Providing general indoor and outdoor safety and security for babies
  • Explaining and applying general child minding supervision 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • The learner would have achieved numeracy and communication competencies at a minimum level of ABET level 2 or the equivalent
  • This will enable the learner to confirm the knowledge and skills required by this unit standard 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The scope of this unit standard is for any person who needs to provide safety and security for babies in a domestic, home- care and/ or child minding environment.
  • The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process is limited in range, very repetitive and familiar, no generation of new ideas is needed and the person has no responsibility for the learning of others.
  • In the context of this unit standard safety and security is provided for babies in a domestic, home- care and/ or child minding in home environment.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Implement safety measures for babies during daily feeding activities. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Routine activities refer to e.g. feeding, bathing and clothing the baby. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety measures when feeding the baby are implemented in accordance with best baby feeding practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Risks associated with heating the milk bottle of the baby in the microwave oven are explained with examples of the various risks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Possible causes of choking are explained with examples of each. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Implement safety measures for babies during daily routine activities. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Routine activities includes but not limited to bathing and clothing the baby.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety measures when bathing the baby are implemented according to requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct manner to prepare the bath for the baby is explained according to workplace procedures and instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety measures when clothing the baby are implemented following all safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The correct clothing that the baby should wear when starting to crawl and walk is explained with examples of each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Possible unexpected emergency situations that could arise during routine activities are named and the way to handle these situations explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Provide general indoor and outdoor safety and security for babies.

    Indoor safety measures are implemented following all indoor safety procedures.

    Potential causes of drowning are explained with practical examples of each cause.

    The importance of constant supervision of the baby is explained with relevant examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reason(s) why any emergencies and / or irregularities are immediately reported to the employer / parent is explained verbally with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The term child abuse is explained and the way and to who it would be reported is demonstrate inline with accepted reporting structures and regulations.

  • Baby refers to a child 0 to 18 months of age
  • Safety measures when feeding the baby with a bottle refer to e.g. testing the temperature of the milk on the inner side of the forearm, not overheating the bottle in the microwave, ensuring the baby is not lying down when drinking from the bottle
  • Safety measures when bathing the baby refer to e.g. ensuring that the bath water is the correct temperature, checking that the taps stay tightly closed during the bath period, topping up the water safely and rinsing hands after the baby was soaped
  • Safety measures when clothing the baby refer to e.g. ensuring all buttons are secure, removing strings, tussles and ribbons from clothing and dressing the bay in the correct clothing for crawling and walking activities
  • Safety measures indoors refer to e.g. positioning kitchenware correctly, not decanting chemicals in cold drink bottles, protecting the baby against sharp objects, preventing climbing on high surfaces, removing causes of shocks and burns, removing objects that could cause choking and suffocation
