PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for people who need to plan, produce and use small scale databases using a GUI based database application.

A person credited with this unit standard is capable to:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of relational database theory.
  • Analysing unstructured data not populated to a relational database model.
  • Creating queries using specific functions.
  • Creating different types of queries.
  • Creating parameter queries and adding calculated fields.
  • Creating basic select queries using simple SQL syntax. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner is competent in the following:
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Knowledge of GUI based database application. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The design refers to all small to mid scale relational databases with a GUI.
  • This standard is applicable to any application that runs on any Graphical User Interface (GUI) operating systems.
  • Where wording is not exact for the chosen operating system or application, the learner can choose the equivalent item or option to demonstrate competence in the specific outcome or assessment criteria.

    Demonstrate an understanding of relational database theory.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Data is organised in a relational database using the rules of normalisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Relationship types are analysed in terms of their optimal implementation in database design. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Relationship types include one-to-many, one-to-one, many-to-man.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The use of keys and indexes are analysed as to avoid redundancy and to speed up data access. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Keys and indexes include primary keys, unique records.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Analyse unstructured data not populated to a relational database model. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Unstructured data is analysed to determine the structure of the database. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Data is categorised and the relevant tables are created to optimise access to the data. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Data fields are created taking into account the data types, indexes and keys. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Data types, indexes and keys include but are not limited to data types, primary key, format, default value, validation rule.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tables are normalised in accordance with the normalisation rules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A relationship diagram is created and relationships implemented between tables. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Creation includes join types, referential integrity.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Create queries using specific functions.

    Specific functions include multiple tables, comparison and logical operators. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Built-in functions of the database program are used to shape data and constrain results. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Functions include but are not limited to date and time functions, text manipulation, inspection functions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Comparison and logical operators are implemented to constrain results to a specified range. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Logical operators include Equals, Greater Than, Less Than, Is Null, Is Not Null, and Like, And, Or, Not).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A query is constructed using multiple tables. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Constructing includes related fields, join types.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Create different types of queries. 
    OUTCOME NOTES 
    Types of queries include sub-queries, cross tab queries, duplicate and unmatched queries.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A sub-query is created by using criteria resulting from another query. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sub-query is created by amongst others checking values against a lookup table, comparing values against other values.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A cross tab query is created by using specific tool provided by GUI relational database to pivot the existing data. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A query is created to find duplicates in a table. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An unmatched query is created to find values with no matching value in a related table. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Create parameter queries and adding calculated fields.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A parameter query is created to constrain the result set by way of entering a constraint in a textbox. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A new field is created in a query by using an aggregation of existing fields by means of arithmetic calculations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A new field is created in a query by using an aggregation of existing fields by means of text manipulation.

    Create basic select queries using simple SQL syntax.

    Constraints include where, order by.

    The distinct keyword is used to return one record.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
