PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to enable Construction Contractors to plan and program, coordinate project activities and implement costing and reporting procedures on a construction project. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
FETC NQF Level 2 literacy and numeracy competencies. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
1. Establishment of a site includes the de-establishment after completion.
2. Programming format is limited to a bar-chart (Gantt chart).
3. Pre-planning includes analysis and fixing of allowable unit costs for activities, programming, and establishing of management information systems.
4. Establishment of a work area includes: survey and setting out, access, adherence to safety and health aspects, security, and provision of resources.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by CETA (RSA, 1998b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for the Certificate in Construction Contracting. CETA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this unit standard. 

UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
Qualifying learners understand and can explain:

1. Programming techniques including: critical path, float time, linked activities, allocation of resources, earliest start and end dates, timescales, and activity sequencing.

2. The purpose and use of Management Information Systems such as : daily costing and reporting of activities, weekly and monthly programs, activity lists for work areas, unit costing, activity production reports, budgets and cash-flows.
