PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Use and maintain refrigeration trade service tools and instruments to ensure correct usage without injury to persons and damage to tools, instruments and equipment.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this Unit Standard are already able to communicate with others.

ABET 4 literary.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Normal working environment using vacuum pumps, absolute pressure gauges, tachometers, clock/dial gauges, micrometers, charging cylinders, weighing scales, refrigerant recovery and recycling equipment, refrigerant leak detection devices and service manifolds fitted with pressure and compound gauges.

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Use refrigeration trade service tools and instruments
OUTCOME RANGE
To draw vacuums, measure pressures, (absolute, and positive and negative gauge pressures) detect leaks, charge specific masses of refrigerant, recover and recycle refrigerant, measure micro millimeter distances of separation and offset, and measure rotational speed in revs per minute.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Each service tool/instrument is used only to perform the function for which it was designed and in a manner consistent with its manufacturer's intent, in order to get the required result without damage or injury to self or tools and instruments.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Tools/instruments are each inspected for proper operation before and after use and for damaged or worn-out components/accessories.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. Faulty operation or damaged components/accessories are reported and, if parts are available, repaired where specialist knowledge or skill is not required.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
Any person wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, who may appoint a moderator to be present at the assessment.
The assessor must have knowledge and experience of air-conditioning or refrigeration.

UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
Read instructions carefully before using unfamiliar tools or equipment. Test items before and after use to ensure proper operation, as batteries may have been running down. Keep all equipment clean and neat. Store copies of operating instructions with each item.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
