US ID | Unit Standard Title | Pre-2009 NQF Level | NQF Level | Credits | Replacement Status |
116229 | Join and install refrigerant piping | Level 2 | NQF Level 02 | 9 |
PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
Join and install refrigerant piping. |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
Use of tools and identification of material, equipment and components used in refrigeration and air-conditioning. |
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
Piping:
Soft copper piping between ?" (3mm) and ?" (20mm) diameter. Hand drawn copper piping between ?"(6mm) and 2?" (53mm) diameter. Steel piping up to ?" (6mm) diameter, as used for domestic, commercial and industrial refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment (excluding systems using ammonia as a refrigerant). Joints: Copper to copper joints including swayed joints. Copper to brass, copper to aluminum and copper to steel. Flared connections. Threaded connections. Flanged connections. Compression fittings. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Form brazed joints |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. Copper to copper brazed joints are made using a filler material that forms a strong mechanical joint, does not require the use of flux and melts below the melting point of copper. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. Copper to brass joints are made with a filler material that bonds evenly with both metals, that melts below their melting points and forms a strong mechanical joint. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. Joints involving steel are made with a filler material that does not combine with the steel to form iron phosphate. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
4. Internal surfaces are inherently free of scale upon completion of the brazing process. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
5. Filler material has penetrated the entire joint. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
6. Joints are leak proof up to 2500 kPa. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Form non-brazed joints |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. Joints of similar or dissimilar materials are formed that are mechanically strong and leak-free up to 2500kPa, using mechanical connecting devices. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. Joints of similar or dissimilar materials are formed that are mechanically strong and leak-free up to 2500kPa, using chemical bonding materials. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Install refrigerant pipes |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. All pipes are installed according to the drawing supplied. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. All pipes are supported to prevent sagging. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. All pipes are protected against abrasion where they pass through openings, touch one another or other pieces of equipment. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Ensure safe oil return |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. All pipes carrying vapour slope correctly and sufficiently to ensure proper oil return. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. Vertical risers carrying vapour are downsized if indicated on the drawing. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. Oil traps are inserted in strict accordance with the drawing. |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
