PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner accredited with this standard will be able to demonstrate an integrated practical and theoretical knowledge in freight elevators, conveyor belt systems and ancillary equipment, according to safe handling and machinery maintenance practices in compliance with manufacturer and legislated standards. The learner will be able demonstrate the handling, protection and care of freight during the movement process in accordance with the customers requirements.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The applied competence expressed in this standard cover a variety of familiar and unfamiliar operational and functional scenarios, in any industry context in which freight elevators and conveyor belt systems are employed. These scenarios require a range of innovative responses based on informed judgement and a broad knowledge base from the learner who must demonstrate responsibility for flow continuity, the safe operation of the systems and freight.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited by the Transport SETA and/or relevant ETQA.

    3. Moderation of assessment will be done by the relevant ETQA at its discretion. 

    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    The learner can understand, explain and apply:

    1. Pre-operational checks of machinery and equipment in terms of manufacturer's specifications, and relevant safety legislation (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act) to ensure operational fitness.

    2. Bulk product characteristics and the safety and commercial risks associated with contamination of different products.

    3. Ancillary equipment utilised for different bulk products in different operating environments.

    4. Layout of conveyor systems (e.g. location, transfer points and combinations of different routes). 


    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):
