PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
To promote the pursuit of lifelong physical and mental well-being. Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to: demonstrate an understanding of the emotional and physical changes that take place due to the development of the human body; describe the role of recreation at a personal and social level; demonstrate an understanding of gender issues and sexuality. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Communication ABET 3 in both English and mother tongue or equivalent; Natural Science.

The physical and emotional changes are identified and explained.

    1. An understanding of the physical changes that take place during human development is demonstrated.

    3. An appreciation of the impact of the changes in the individual during human development is discussed.

    Demonstrate an understanding of gender issues and sexuality. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Sexual identity and orientation includes biological, social and mental identity. e.g. homosexual, bisexual, heterosexual, transsexual.
  • Sexual practices = different ways of expressing sexual urges harmful or not, legal or not e.g. fetishes, celibacy, pre-marital virginity, masturbation, sado-machism - iIlegal includes paedophillia and bestiality..
  • Gender identity to include perception on roles and behaviour and superficial and physical appearance.

    3. An awareness of the different perspectives on gender identity is demonstrated.

    4. An awareness of the difference between gender and sexuality.

    5. An awareness of the legal status of contraception and abortion and the controversies surrounding them is demonstrated.

    6. The various family planning methods are understood and discussed.

    7. Prevention and treatment of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) is understood and discussed.

  • Recreation is referred to as amusement, entertainment, relaxation, sport, and creative activities.
  • Recreation is a subjective term, which for some individuals can include activities that are illegal and or harmful to others.
