PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

To promote the pursuit of lifelong physical and mental well-being. Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to: demonstrate an understanding of the emotional and physical changes that take place due to the development of the human body; describe the role of recreation at a personal and social level; demonstrate an understanding of gender issues and sexuality.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Communication ABET 3 in both English and mother tongue or equivalent; Natural Science.

1. An understanding of the physical changes that take place during human development is demonstrated.

2. An understanding of the emotional changes that take place during human development is demonstrated.

3. An appreciation of the impact of the changes in the individual during human development is discussed.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2

Demonstrate an understanding of gender issues and sexuality.

OUTCOME RANGE

Sexual identity and orientation includes biological, social and mental identity. e.g. homosexual, bisexual, heterosexual, transsexual.

Sexual practices = different ways of expressing sexual urges harmful or not, legal or not e.g. fetishes, celibacy, pre-marital virginity, masturbation, sado-machism - iIlegal includes paedophillia and bestiality..

Gender identity to include perception on roles and behaviour and superficial and physical appearance.

OUTCOME RANGE

Recreation is referred to as amusement, entertainment, relaxation, sport, and creative activities.

Recreation is a subjective term, which for some individuals can include activities that are illegal and or harmful to others.

1. An awareness of the different personal, social, physical and mental forms of recreational activities is displayed.
