PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners credited with this standard will be able to prepare to do a product change of a polymer manufacturing process, perform a product change of a polymer manufacturing process, achieve normal process conditions, confirm achievement of product specifications and manage emergency and abnormal conditions.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Appropriate credits from Textiles Qualification NQF Level 2.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Applies to the use of acrylics and polyester manufacturing.

In respect of polyester, this apply to processes of paste mixing, monomer manufacturing (or esterification) and polymerisation.

In the area of acrylics, chemical processes such as solvent recovery forms part of the polymerisation process.

The management of the transition from a product to a new product is included here where achieving normal process conditions are achieved.

Tests will not include those concluded in a laboratory.

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Prepare to do a product change over of a polymer manufacturing process

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Appropriate authorisation, as per in company procedure and legislation, is obtained (permit to work, clearance certificates production control instructions) prior to performing a product changeover.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Appropriate specified documentation is obtained (product / process specifications).

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. Process specifications are interpreted and correctness verified in order to determine required actions.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

5. Adequate resources, as per procedures, are allocated.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
6. Team members are informed, as per standard operating practices, and are ready to perform their required activities.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
7. Raw materials coming from previous processes are verified for correctness, as per specification, and are available.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Perform a product change over of a polymer manufacturing process

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Adjustments, in line with new product specifications and operating conditions, are made and double checked (pressures, temperatures, speeds).

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Product and services routes are set, adjusted and confirmed in accordance with required product specifications.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Achieve normal process conditions

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. A logical scanning routine, as per in company specification, is used in order to achieve required process conditions.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Normal process conditions are achieved within the defined time scale for the process and prevailing conditions with reference to specified procedure.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. Specified actions (within scope of authority) are taken to identify and eliminate the cause/s of abnormal process conditions.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Confirm achievement of product specification

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Samples are taken and quality checks are carried out / initiated in accordance with normal work practices and specifications.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Product is checked using applicable test equipment as per laid down procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Manage emergency and abnormal conditions

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Possible impact of abnormalities / emergencies on other areas are identified and relevant personnel, in line with laid down procedures, are timeously informed.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Incidents, hazardous conditions and emergencies are reported, timeously as per specified procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. Nature, location and scope of incident is verified when an incident is reported, verbally or in writing.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
4. Specified alarms are raised immediately on discovery of the emergency.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
5. Plant emergency procedure is followed according to nature and severity of incident.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
Appropriate ETQAs within the Engineering Manufacturing and Technology field and the Education and Training Board for the Textile Industry will accredit providers and assessors.

UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
Learners will engage with the following knowledge components:
  • Explain the importance of specifications and the interpretation thereof.
  • Reasons for conducting tests are explained.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of productivity and quality critical aspects of the change over process.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the procedures to be followed when making settings and adjustments to process and equipment conditions.
  • Read and understand applicable work instructions.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of recognising faults and the need for appropriate action to be taken.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
