PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard would be useful to all people involved in the Auctioneering industry, particularly those responsible for the handling and transportation of livestock and game as well as agricultural products.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Moving livestock and game.
  • Moving agricultural products.
  • Loading and unloading livestock, game and agricultural products.
  • Permanently identifying and weighing livestock, game and agricultural products.
  • Organising the transportation of livestock, game and agricultural products.
  • Completing documentation for the transport of livestock, game and agricultural products. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

  • Safety equipment may include but is not limited to shield, helmet, goggles, overalls and Safety shoes.
  • Livestock species may include cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, fish and equine.
  • Game may include antelope, zebra, buffalo, wildebeest, elephant, rhinos, hippo, warthog, bush-pig, carnivores, ungulates, very large mammals and small mammals.
  • Agricultural products may include maize, wheat, vegetables, fruit, flowers, herbs, bulbs, seeds, wool, mohair, carcasses, cured hides and skins.

    Move livestock and game. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Methods to move livestock and game are explained in terms of stress to the animals, minimising risk of injury to the animals, other animals or people. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The behaviour of livestock and game is monitored during the transit, and indicators of stress are identified and counteracted in accordance with industry accepted techniques for the specific breed being transported. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Stress and discomfort to animals during transit are described in terms of their causes, effect on the animal and ways of reducing the negative effects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Livestock and game are held in yards for a settling in period in a manner that minimises stress and injury to the animal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Safety equipment, clothing and footwear used are described in terms of reducing the risk of injury to self and livestock and game during various activities.

    Move agricultural products.

    Agricultural products are moved with least risk of damage to products and injury to people. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Agricultural products are held in yards in a manner that avoids contamination, unnecessary aging and damage as well as injury to people in the yard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety equipment, clothing and footwear used are described in terms of reducing the risk of injury to self and damage to agricultural products during various activities. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Load and unload livestock, game and agricultural products.

    Load and unload livestock, game and agricultural products.

    Loading and unloading are carried out in accordance with relevant legislative requirements.

    Loading and unloading of livestock and game are carried out with least risk of injury to themselves, other animals or people.

    Loading and unloading of agricultural products is carried out in a manner that avoids contamination, unnecessary ageing and damage, as well as injury to people participating in the process.

    Identify and weigh livestock, game and agricultural products.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment for weighing and identifying livestock, game and agricultural products is used in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Livestock and game are identified and weighed without causing undue stress or risk of injury to the animal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Agricultural products are identified and weighed without causing damage or contamination to the products or injury to personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Livestock and game are permanently identified, in a manner which is humane, hygienic and in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Agricultural products are permanently identified, in a manner which is hygienic and in accordance with industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Records of livestock, game and agricultural products are maintained according to organisational requirements.

    Negotiate for the transportation of livestock, game and agricultural products.

    Seller and buyer responsibilities relating to the transport of livestock, game and agricultural products are negotiated and recorded in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Transport rates are negotiated and agreed in accordance with standard procurement procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Transport details are arranged in a manner that meets both the seller's and buyer's requirements.

    Complete documentation for the transport of livestock, game and agricultural products.
