PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is that credited learners are able to examine and test drivers of light motor vehicles (Code B) to determine if their driving is at the standard required for licensing. Application of this set of competencies will ensure that appropriately licensed drivers enter the traffic system, thus promoting driver competence and contributing to road safety, and minimising loss of life and associated economic costs in South Africa. This unit standard influences adherence to traffic rules and promotes traffic safety.

This unit standard also allows for transformation with the traffic policing and driving licensing professions, as learners become models for other learners. This attracts quality people and allows for the aspirations of people to be part of the traffic policing and driving licensing professions. The recognition of prior learning will formalise informal and non-formal leaning and learners will be able to obtain credits towards a national qualification.

Learners credited against this unit standard are capable of:
  • Identifying an applicant for a driving licence - Code B.
  • Administering the prescribed prerequisites for a driving licence.
  • Administering the South African driver`s examination - as prescribed by the NRTA, and set out in the applicable K53 manual.
  • Assessing the applicant according to the South African driver`s examination as prescribed by legislation.
  • Completing the prescribed evaluation forms.
  • Authorizing and/or the issuing of a learners licence of any code (code 1, 2 and 3).
  • Authorising and/or the issuing of a Code B driving licences.
  • Record results as prescribed.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard is related to the traffic environment, namely, driver examination for code B driving licence. The typical context is embedded in the National Road Traffic Act. Credited learners will reflect the ability to develop a rigorous approach to the acquisition of a broad knowledge base regarding examination for learner`s licensing. Credited learners can employ a range of specialised driver examination skills, and determine solutions to a variety of unpredictable problems during driver examination for licensing, often including a range of varied and specific contexts involving creative and non-routine activities. They can exercise appropriate judgement in presenting test results.

    Currently the standard South African driver`s examination is referred to as the K53 driving test. Credited learners must be able to examine light motor vehicles according to specified criteria. Competence includes applying the system of vehicle control and using relevant equipment and materials, as prescribed in the applicable K53 manual.

    Verify driving licence applicants` identity and information following prescribed procedures.

    Identification of applicants` identity and information is corroborated by previously recorded information on the National Traffic Information System/eNATIS.

    Determine whether the class of vehicle is suitable for the appropriate test and proceed as prescribed.

    Conduct driving licence yard tests according to minimum requirements.
