    It is assumed that Learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard involves the assembly of complex electrical components, electrical machine components and sub assemblies, mechanical components.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Job instructions are interpreted to establish assembly requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Engineering drawings are interpreted to determine sequence of assembly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Area for the assembly is prepared according to standard operating procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Materials, components and tools required at the workstation are checked to ensure they meet the quality required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Machines to be used are inspected and tested to ensure that the assembly process will be efficient. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Assemble complex components. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Assembly of components typically involves building to work orders, low volume runs, long assembly timeframes and complex assemblies. It also includes aspects such as clearances, specifications, mesh, tension, level, alignment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Components for assembly are handled according to standard operating procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Components are assembled according to engineering drawings and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Machines, tools, materials and components are monitored and adjusted to meet assembly requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Monitoring includes checking availability of materials and components.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Assembled products are inspected, adjusted and tested for conformance to specifications and/or customer requirements using appropriate instruments. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Instruments include verniers, micrometers, dial gauges, feeder gauges, straight edge, spirit levels, torque wrenches.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Assembled products are checked against engineering drawings and specifications.

    All defective components are marked or removed from the assembly line as per standard operating procedure.

    Assembly process cycle time conforms to customer and company requirements.

    All occurrences, activities, adjustments and problems related to the assembly process, materials and assembled products during a shift are recorded as per company procedure.

    Assembled product is packaged and stored as per company requirements or sent to a downstream environment.

    Tools and equipment are cleaned and stored according to specific workplace requirements.

    Surplus material is stored according to standard procedure.

    The implications of incorrect storing of surplus materials, tools and equipment are explained in terms of the impact on health, safety and the environment.

    Scrap material is disposed of according to workplace, health and environmental requirements and the implications of not doing so are discussed.

    All quality deviations and inspections results are documented and reported to appropriate personnel according to company procedure. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.

    3. Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.

    4. Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.
