PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who manage controlled burning operations for fire breaks, slash burning and burning under plantation trees. The crew leader manages team members in ensuring that the fire plan is implemented and that mop up activities are carried out after the event.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Plan for a controlled burn.
  • Implement the control burn activities in accordance with the local fire plan.
  • Mop up the fire line or burnt area to prevent fire spread and re-ignition.

    Burning permits are confirmed to ensure compliance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reasons for controlled burn are ascertained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Information pertaining to controlled burn is presented and communicated to team members in accordance with local requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Resources are mobilized to ensure safe burning. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Resources include but are not limited to PPE, personnel and equipment.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Implement the control burn activities in accordance with the local fire plan.

    Resource placement and deployment is explained and demonstrated in accordance with the fire plan.

    Controlled burn is conducted in accordance with local fire plan.

    The area being burnt is constantly monitored for hazardous situations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Appropriate measures are taken in the event of unplanned incidents occurring. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Mop up the fire line or burnt area to prevent fire spread and re-ignition.

    Dangerous areas for mopping up are identified and extinguished to prevent further burning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All burning and smoldering materials are extinguished to prevent further burning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Highly flammable vegetation inside and outside is identified to prevent further burning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Control lines are re-enforced to ensure no re-ignition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Burnt area is patrolled to check spot fires. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Feeling out is conducted by making use of the necessary methods and equipment (e.g. heat scanner) to pick up heat signals.
