PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Crew leaders and their teams use two-way radios for and during wildfire suppression operations. This unit standard is for people using two-way radios.

They are equipped with the knowledge and skills to maintain two-way radios and to apply the legal, health and safety procedures, as well as the related communication terminology and protocols. The unit standard also enables the target group to correctly handle and use the equipment appropriately according to standard requirements.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Communicate messages in accordance with standard radio speech protocol.
  • Maintain radio communications equipment.
  • Establish reasons for varying signal strengths and apply corrective actions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The basic statutory requirements for radio communication are explained in accordance with legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The message is communicated using standard terminology and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The message is communicated in accordance with Incident Command Plan and prescribed principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Health and safety measures are adhered to during the use of a radio. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Precautionary measures include but are not limited to lightning, driving and using a two way radio system near explosive material.

    Maintain two way radio communications equipment.

    Radio is stored according to manufacturer's standards.

    Manufacturers Standards include but are not limited to water, pouch and battery life.

    Radio is charged in accordance with manufacturer's standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Radio is handled according to manufacturer standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Base sets, mobile, portables, water and pouch.

    Establish reasons for varying signal strengths and apply corrective actions.

    Reasons for varying signal strengths are ascertained in accordance with local conditions.

    Corrective actions are implemented in accordance with varying signal strengths.

    Basic radio faults are identified and rectified by applying standard diagnostic procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
