PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for learners who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to fancy cut large diamond gemstones.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for fancy cutting large diamond gemstones.
  • Fancy cut large diamond gemstones.
  • Conduct post- fancy cutting cleaning, checking and security activities.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication at NQF Level 4. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for fancy cutting large diamond gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fancy shaped diamond gemstones are identified from drawings and diagrams. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fancy diamond gemstones must include:
  • Square shaped cuts.
  • Irregular shaped cuts.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Visible rough points in diamond gemstones are identified in different diamond types from drawings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The polishing grains in two, three and four point stones are identified in terms of the crystallography of diamonds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Key features, implications for polishing and methods to overcome such problems are described in terms of types of problems.

    The types of problems that can be encountered must include:

  • Naat.
  • Cross-grain.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Advanced faceting hints and techniques for fancy cutting large diamond gemstones are explained in terms of different applications and the consequences of using inappropriate fancy cutting techniques.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stones received are checked and examined to determine the appropriate process to create the required fancy shape. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Appropriate processes must include:
  • Fancy blocking.
  • Fancy shaping.
  • Fancy lapping.
  • Fancy Polishing.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The required facets and dimensions for the selected fancy diamond are determined in consultation with the marker. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and applied according to required standards of occupational health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stones are set in the appropriate equipment for the selected process for making the selected fancy shape according to workplace specific operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Appropriate settings on the selected equipment are made for making the selected fancy shape according to workplace specific operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The equipment is prepared for making the selected fancy shape, before applying the stone to the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Stones are processed using the appropriate methodology to address the given requirements for the selected fancy shape in line with the requirements as indicated by the marker and within defined quality and output standards.

    Occupational health and safety hazards are monitored during making of fancy shapes and remedial action is taken where necessary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 10 
    Weights of diamond gemstones are within the laid down tolerance levels after making fancy shapes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Diamond gemstones are removed from pots after fancy cutting, cleaned and inspected for quality of finish in relation to workplace specifications. Remedial action, where necessary, is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Good housekeeping is exercised after fancy cutting diamond gemstones. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • Clean pots and tangs.
  • Replace pots and tangs into correct storage facilities.
  • Maintenance of personal protective clothing and equipment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Diamond gemstones are accounted for after fancy cutting in terms of the workplace security system.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
