PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of understanding the principles of using a hand held compass in conjunction with a topographical map to navigate in different terrain conditions. The learner will be able to use a compass and understand the functionality of the different components of a hand held compass.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Describe the principles of operation of a magnetic hand held compass.
  • Describe the functions of the different components of a compass.
  • Take a magnetic bearing of a distant object with a magnetic hand held compass.
  • Determine compass error.
  • Maintain a hand held magnetic compass.

    Persons credited with this unit standard will have the ability to participate in activities across the spectrum of learning fields in the RSA, which requires navigation between geographical positions. This competency will enhance the capabilities of security organisations to maintain peace and security within the community and the sovereignty of the RSA.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the principles of operation of a magnetic hand held compass. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Magnetic North is explained from a Southern African perspective. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ways to minimize environmental influences on the operation of a magnetic hand held compass is explained in accordance with the impact it has on the compass. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the functions of the different components of a compass. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The components of the compass are identified and explained in accordance with the functioning thereof. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reticulation standard (degrees or mills) of a specific compass in use is explained in accordance with the approved notation methods. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Take a magnetic bearing of a distant object with a magnetic hand held compass. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Magnetic bearing must be within a 2 degree range of accuracy, either side of the sighting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The possible magnetic influences in the vicinity are explained and how to overcome these to improve the accuracy of the compass when taking a bearing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A bearing to a given geographical point within sighting range is determined. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The difference between a bearing and a back bearing is described. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Determine the compass error. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    This must be determined on a calibration range where the magnetic bearing between two points is a given.

    The reasons for determining compass error are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The compass error is calculated in accordance with organisational approved techniques.

    Maintain a hand held magnetic compass.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The ability to determine the serviceability of the compass is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The storage requirements of the magnetic hand held compass are explained as specified in the operating instructions and organisational policies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    During- and after-use maintenance of the compass is explained as specified in the operating instructions.
