PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for specialised policing units in the field of safety in society who need to execute policing functions and tasks in high risk and dangerous situations where specialised training and equipment is needed. This unit standard will contribute towards compliance with tactical, legal, safety and organisational requirements related to specialised operations.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Use a pistol competently and effectively in medium to high-risk operations.
  • Use an assault rifle competently in medium to high-risk operations.
  • Use a shotgun competently in medium to high-risk operations. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner is competent in:
  • Using firearms at NQF Level 5. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Day and night.
  • Rural and urban environments.
  • Tactical movement includes walking and running.
  • Shooting positions include but are not limited to standing, kneeling and prone.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Use a pistol competently and effectively in medium to high-risk assault operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The pistol is drawn in a structured scenario while moving tactically towards the target. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Movement is conducted with the pistol in a ready position. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hostile and neutral targets are identified and engaged in a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Transition from the primary to the secondary firearm is demonstrated tactically in a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The magazine is changed in a set time while making use of available cover. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The pistol is drawn and fired from a shooting position in a set time during a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Shooting from behind cover to the left and right is demonstrated during a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The target is effectively illuminated with a torch without compromising the position or vision of team members.

    Use an assault rifle competently and effectively in medium to high-risk operations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Movement is conducted with the assault rifle in a ready position. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Hostile and neutral targets are identified and engaged in a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Transition from the primary to the secondary firearm is demonstrated tactically in a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The magazine is changed in a set time while making use of available cover. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Shooting from behind cover to the left and right is demonstrated during a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The use of the tactical sling is demonstrated in order to enhance accuracy while shooting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The target is effectively illuminated with a torch without compromising the position or vision of team members.

    Use a shotgun competently and effectively in medium to high-risk operations.

    Movement is conducted with the shotgun in a ready position. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Hostile and neutral targets are identified and engaged in a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Transition from the primary to the secondary firearm is demonstrated tactically in a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The shotgun is loaded tactically during a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Breaching techniques using the shotgun are demonstrated in a structured scenario.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through Recognition of Prior Learning) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
