PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The purpose of this unit standard is for learners to be able to produce single and multiple-colour screen prints using both stencil and reduction methods. Multiple colour screen printmaking methods and techniques provide learners with a basis both for the development of more advanced printmaking methods, as well as a set of skills that they can apply to the production of marketable fine art prints, textiles and graphic materials for media contexts (posters, T-shirts, etc).

Visual artists equipped with this competence will be able to contribute to the development of a professional culture of printmaking within the visual arts, and produce artwork, which is underpinned by a comprehensive understanding, and confident application of the tools, materials and equipment associated with multiple colour screen printing methods.

Credited learners are capable of:
  • Planning and developing an image/design for screen printing.
  • Preparing and cutting a print surface for multiple colour relief printmaking.
  • Developing images through screen-printing process.
  • Producing an edition of multiple-colour relief prints.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • The Unit Standard:
    > Produce artworks using basic printmaking principles, processes and methods, at NQF Level 3.
