PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible to manage a geological core yard facility to ensure the safekeeping and retrieval of borehole core and cuttings, sample material and equipment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate the knowledge required to manage a geological core yard facility.
  • Manage a geological core yard.
  • Compile and present activity reports.

    Demonstrate knowledge of managing a geological core yard facility. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of managing a core yard facility effectively is described in terms of the affect on safety and health matters, time management of personnel and security of geological material. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The contents of the site-specific work requirements are explained in terms of the area of responsibility and authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The potential effects on the occupational health and safety of people are described if the required legal requirements are not adhered to. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The possible and probable consequences are described if unauthorised access is obtained to the core yard. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Manage a geological core yard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Personal protective equipment is selected on a daily basis and examined for any defects and used in accordance with specified requirements. Defective personal protective equipment is dealt with in accordance with site-specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The workplace is examined at the beginning of the shift and immediately after any geological activities has been conducted in the workplace for potential and actual hazardous and sub-standard conditions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Must be one or a combination of the following:
  • Slippery surfaces.
  • Electricity in close proximity to water.
  • Poor illumination.
  • Unprotected operating machinery in close proximity to personnel.
  • Spillage of fluids and solids.
  • Faulty wiring.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Work related hazards and associated risks that have an effect on a safe and healthy work environment are dealt with in accordance with the requirements of the relevant Mine, Health and Safety Act. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Must include:
  • Eye/facial injuries.
  • Hand and foot injuries.
  • Incorrect lifting procedure and spinal injuries.
  • Chemical burns.
  • Communication failure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The correct retrieval and laying out of core and/or cutting material is supervised and the sequence of activities are closely monitored to ensure that the material is ready for logging and sampling purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Geological material and consumables that enter and leave the core yard facility are accurately documented and any discrepancies are recorded in accordance with the laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The availability of machinery and equipment, tools and consumer materials is confirmed when requested by geological personnel. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Must include:
  • Power or pneumatic saws to cut core or rock material.
  • Hammers and chisels to split core.
  • Sample bags and sample labels.
  • Cleansing and drying materials.
  • Epoxy and other resins.
  • Core trays/boxes and sample containers.

    The core yard and facilities are inspected prior to the end of the shift and ensured to comply with and documented good housekeeping practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment and tools are cleaned, examined and ensured for future use and defective equipment and tools are maintained in accordance with laid down procedures.

    Manage a core yard facility:

    Manage a core yard facility represents a complete managerial and technical process where the learner must ensure that all the required activities are conducted or executed in a safe and healthy manner and that all the requests of management are adhered to in accordance with the relevant work instructions received. It is expected of the learner to exhibit leadership characteristics in the presence of junior and senior personnel and to lead by example.

    A core yard facility:

    A core yard facility is a defined area where geological material, such as borehole core and cuttings are stored for future use or prepared for logging and sampling purposes. The infrastructure can consist of permanent buildings as found at a mine or of temporary buildings normally found at remote exploration sites where facilities are available to handle geological material.
