    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of elementary grid and the use of basic measuring instruments. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The various recognised methods and the use of the appropriate equipment when laying out an elementary grid are described in terms of standard geological practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The contents of the work instruction and the consequences of non-compliance with the requirements are described in terms of the potential impact on the reliability of the geological information that will be obtained from the grid points. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The potential effect on the reliability of the geological information if the grid layout is incorrect is described in the context of mining operations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range must include:
  • Geophysical surveys.
  • Geochemical surveys.
  • Geological mapping.

    Lay out a grid on surface. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Permission to enter the work area, when required, is obtained in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective equipment is selected and examined for any defects and used in accordance with legal and site specific requirements. Defective personal protective equipment is dealt with in accordance with laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The tools, materials and equipment required to lay out the grid are selected, examined and verified in accordance with the work instruction received. Defective tools, materials and equipment are dealt with in accordance with site specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Potential and actual hazardous and sub-standard conditions found during the examination of the work area are dealt with in accordance with legal and site-specific requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range must include any one or a combination of the following:
  • Slippery surfaces.
  • Electricity in close proximity to water.
  • Poor visibility.
  • Broken rock.
  • Excessive accumulation of surface water.
  • Excessive surface gradients.
  • Operating machinery in close proximity.
  • Adverse weather conditions (lightning).
  • Dangerous reptiles/animals.
  • Poisonous insects.
  • Chemical and solid mineral matter contamination.

    The grid starting point is correctly located and verified in accordance with the work instruction received. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The terrain is assessed in terms of its suitability for laying out the required grid and any unsuitable conditions encountered are dealt with in accordance with the work instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The tools, materials and equipment required to lay out the grid are used in accordance with the laid down procedures and manufacturer's specifications, when required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The base line is laid out from the starting point in accordance with the requirements of the work instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    The grid lines are laid out from the base line in accordance with the required grid pattern and the grid line intersection points are demarcated in accordance with the work instruction.

    Compile and present completion report.

    The tools, materials and equipment are cleaned and ensured to be ready for future use in accordance with site-specific requirements.

    The work area place is cleaned to comply with documented and recognised good housekeeping practices.

    The completion reports are submitted in the required format and in accordance with site specific requirements.

    Completion of the work is communicated to the relevant personnel, when required, in accordance with site-specific requirements.
