Persons credited with this learning unit know and understand the techniques and methods for the safe handling and use of Chlorine installations. Learners will know and understand the best practices for safe handling and usage of chlorine, safe connection and disconnection procedures of chlorine containers and requirements for usage and distribution of chlorine.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for chlorine is interpreted for application in the handling of chlorine. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for chlorine pertaining to identification, hazardous identification, health effects, first aid, fire fighting, personal protective clothing (PPE), accidental release measures, handling and storage, physical properties and reactivity.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective equipment is identified and explained in terms of its use in protecting the worker. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The different chlorine containers and their components are identified according to their application. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Different components are limited to different sizes of chlorine containers, gas and liquid phases, valve components and container identification.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Detection methods for finding chlorine leaks are identified and their use understood according to standard work procedures.

    Usages of the ammonia vapour to identify leaks.

    Emergency procedures for handling chlorine are explained in terms of organizational requirements.

    First aid treatment for exposure to chlorine is identified and explained as they apply to first responders.

    First aid is limited to:
  • Skin contact.
  • Eye contact.
  • Mild inhalation.
  • Severe inhalation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The use of correct Personal Protective Equipment is demonstrated according to supplier work instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The preparations for connecting a container onto a chlorine system are performed according to supplier work instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Containers are connected to the chlorine system as per supplier work instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tests for detecting chlorine leaks are performed as per supplier work instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Abnormal/out of normal conditions are identified and acted upon according to supplier instructions and guidelines. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Testing for leaks is limited to the usage of ammonia vapour.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Preparations for disconnecting the container are performed according to supplier work instructions.

    Containers are disconnected from the chlorine system as per supplier work instructions.

    Remove and store the portable containers according to supplier work instruction.

  • Off loading, handling and transport of container from storage area to plant room.
  • Different types of connections to the different connection points are not limited to the following connections:
    > Close coupled, serpentine and yoke type fittings.
  • Reporting and handling out of normal conditions are limited to the reporting structures and handling of the incidents.
  • Storage is limited to the transport and storage of containers.

    Instructions for the distribution of chlorine are interpreted as per supplier requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Instrumentation settings for chlorine dosage are explained as per organizational work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Principles and concepts for distribution of the gas into a system are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Parameters to be monitored are identified as per operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Reporting and documentation requirements for chlorine usage are explained as per organizational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Correct dosage of the system as per work instructions.
  • System includes but is not limited to a single portable container, manifold system and a storage container in a whole process.
     


  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through Recognition of Prior Learning) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
