PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to start up, monitor, adjust and shut down a product/assembly process.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing for production/assembly activity.
  • Monitoring and adjusting the production/assembly process.
  • Performing finishing activities on product produced.
  • Recognising and reporting changes and/or malfunctions while operating.
  • Documenting all occurrences on a shift.

  • "Adjust and maintain production/assembly process" implies the active involvement of the learner in bringing the production line back into specification by responding to equipment indicators when deviations occur.

    Required tools, equipment and instruments are checked for availability and serviceability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Calibration of instruments and other data collection equipment is checked according to manufacturing specifications.

    The consequences of not preparing adequately are explained in terms of the impact on health, safety and production.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Machinery is started up according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment indicators are responded to by making adjustments by using appropriate tools and instruments to ensure machines run effectively. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Adjustments include adjustments to feed, speed, level, pressure, temperature, flow, and other controls.

    Process control data is checked to ensure that the process is within specification once adjustments have been made. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The condition of tooling is maintained according to set standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Maintaining tooling condition may include but are not limited to:
  • Protecting tooling and forming surfaces from contamination and damage, cleaning and clearing cooling channels, applying corrosion inhibitors and cleaning agents, removing particles and dust from tooling surfaces and moving components, lubricating and applying release agents.

    Appropriate quality tests and inspections are performed and repeated as necessary to determine the nature of the problem or obtain required results.
