PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners working towards this Unit Standard will be working within a sport education function, or golf club environment providing support services to golf clubs, golf coaching, and golf event management, where the acquisition of competence against this Unit Standard will add value to one`s job. This Unit Standard will also provide the learner with an understanding of how to maintain golf courses and participate in the greenkeeping function.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Applying a basic understanding of mowers and grass cutting in golf course maintenance.
  • Explaining the maintenance requirements of golf course areas with examples.
  • Integrating cultural practices in greenkeeping and golf course maintenance.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of golf course bunkers, and their maintenance.

    Apply a basic understanding of mowers and grass cutting in golf course maintenance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The types of grass cutting machinery are explained in relationship to their use in maintaining different areas of a golf course. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Grass cutting machinery includes but are not limited to:
  • Rotary, reel and brushcutter.

    Golf course areas include, but are not limited to:
  • Rough, semi-rough, tee, fairway, greens, edges and gardens.

    The details of grass cutting on a golf course are explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Details include, but are not limited to, height, frequency, direction and quality.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The types of grasses, their use on golf courses and maintenance requirements are explained in relation to maintaining a golf course. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Grass types include, but are not limited to: Kikuyu, Bermuda, Bentgrass and Veld Grass.

    The procedures for using grass cutting machinery operation is understood in the context of training.

    A golf course green is described in terms of quality characteristics, grasses used and construction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The maintenance practices for maintaining a green are explained and described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Practices include, but are not limited to:
  • Mowing, edging, weeding, verticutting, dusting rolling, repairing, thatch control, fertilization, irrigation, aeration, topdressing, pest and disease management.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The maintenance practices for maintaining fairways, tees, rough and semi-rough are explained and described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Practices include, but are not limited to:
  • Planting sods, soil preparation and levels, fertilisation, irrigation, topdressing, and scarifying.

    Raking of bunkers is explained utilising various raking methods.

    The methods for edging bunkers are explained with examples.

    The maintenance of correct sand levels in bunkers and the redistribution of sand within bunkers are explained with examples.

    The types and quality of bunker sands and their maintenance are explained with examples.
