PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who are required to use desktop publishing tools and/or applications in the execution of their duties. Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to apply desktop publishing resources and software to create layouts in line with the brief and which are suitable for the stakeholders. Learners are able to test the product to ensure it meets with original objectives, the brief, and present the final product to relevant stakeholders.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of desktop publishing.
  • Apply the desktop publishing process.
  • Evaluate the completed work.
  • Prepare the completed layout for review or print.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of the principles of desktop publishing using the accepted industry terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Desktop publishing tools and resources are explained according to their function and application. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tools and resources include Adobe Creative Suites and QuarkXPress.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the desk top publishing process.

    Apply the desktop publishing process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A layout is created using the chosen software according to the brief and in line with applicable rules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Images are selected and placed in the layout according to their suitability to the content and in line with the brief. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The completed layouts are reviewed and altered to ensure consistency with the original project requirement.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of pre-flighting processes to find and solve layout problems. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Pre-flighting refers to the automatic detection of layout errors including widows and orphans, rivers and streams, overflow, image depth and colour space, layout colour space and font integrity.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The completed layout is tested using pre-flight methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Layout errors are identified and corrected in line with the test results. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Prepare the completed layout for review or print.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of formats appropriate for the creation and use as a means of sending of reviews and prints. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Appropriate formats may include but is not limited to Portable Document Format (PDF).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The completed layout is converted into an appropriate format for review and print at the applicable resolutions.
