PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This is the first of two Unit Standards that constitute the monitoring and adjusting of production machines. There are a number of contexts in which the learner can work. The time it will take a learner to acquire the competencies to prepare to monitor and adjust production machines in his/her context within the automotive component environment will depend on the type of machines present in that context. A learner should also be cognisant of the fact that the production machine is extremely expensive and correct operation is very important not only for the longevity of the production machine but also for the continuation of the production process.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Explain the safety, health and environmental aspects pertaining to the monitoring and adjusting of specific machines.
  • Prepare for work activities.
  • Set-up and select tooling.
  • Explain and apply tooling preservation and transportation.

  • The automotive components environment includes both the manufacturing and assembly departments or sections.
  • This Unit Standard is not restricted to the automotive environment. It can be used in any component assembly or manufacturing context.
  • 'Production process' includes both manufacturing and assembly.

    Explain the safety, health and environmental aspects pertaining to the monitoring and adjusting of specific machines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The safety procedures for the specific type of machine are explained and adhered to in order to ensure that there is no injury to self and others. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Machines that are being monitored and adjusted could either be working or switched off or locked out according to procedure.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective equipment appropriate to a specific machine is used correctly to prevent risk of injury. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The implications pertaining to poor safety and housekeeping practices are discussed in terms of impact on self, others and the production process. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    This includes but is not limited to the effects of smoke, dust and noise.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The monitoring and adjusting activities are performed in accordance with workplace procedures to ensure maximum safety.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tools, equipment and instruments are identified that will be used to ensure efficiency in the production process and the consequences of their incorrect usage are identified in terms of the impact on efficiency of the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of time and planning is discussed in terms of ensuring synchronisation of the production process to meet customer deadlines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The production schedule is obtained to ensure that the materials for the process are made available and prepared ahead of time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Activities are planned according to standard operating procedures to meet production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of incorrectly following preparation procedures are discussed in terms of the impact on the company's business.

    The machine is loaded and prepared for start-up according to standard operating procedure and production schedule.

    The specific tooling requirements for individual machines are identified in terms of maintaining production requirements.

    The purpose of tooling parts and components is discussed in terms of the various types of machines. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of machines vary in terms of complexity of operation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Visual inspection of tooling is conducted according to manufacturer's specifications and standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The procedures for the installation, adjustment, positioning and setting of tooling are discussed and applied to ensure that production will take place according to schedule. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Equipment used for the installation, adjustment, positioning and setting of tooling is identified and used according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Tooling parameters are verified to ensure that machines perform optimally and to prevent damage. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Parameters include but are not limited to machine speed, temperature, tonnage limitation, type of tool holder.

    The consequences of incorrect tooling installation and of using defective tooling are discussed in terms of impact on production and delivery to customer.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The removal and handling of tooling from machines is explained in accordance with standard operating procedure and manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The appropriate methods and/or procedures for cleaning tooling are discussed in terms of maintaining production and promoting longer usage of tooling and the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Preservation problems are discussed and dealt with according to standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    These include but are not limited to mechanical damage, contamination, improper cleaning and corrosion.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment used for lifting and transporting tooling is discussed in terms of their functions and capabilities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tooling is transported according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Tooling is stored according to standard operating procedures and the consequences of incorrect storage are discussed with regards to the cost to company. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Problems associated with preparation for monitoring and adjusting of machines are reported to relevant personnel in terms of company procedures.
