PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this standard will appreciate the importance of performing marking-off with accuracy, preparing for and performing marking off using the appropriate tools and equipment. They will learn about the importance of using the right tools and equipment, caring for and storing them. The learner will also learn about materials and their potential defects.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Marking-off dimensions from working drawings are checked and evaluated for purposes of accuracy and preciseness of final product. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different templates are described in terms of how they are constructed and what materials are used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Aspects related to marking-off are discussed to prevent stains and fractures that could influence the quality of the final product. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Aspects include cleaning, descaling, clamping and levelling techniques.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Clamps are described in terms of how they are used to secure the drawing during marking-off activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Safety issues with respect to chemical solutions and materials used in the marking-off process are discussed to ensure safety before and during marking-off. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Appropriate marking-off tools are selected to cater for different sizes and materials.

    Materials are examined to detect potential flaws and appropriate steps are taken to deal with defects or defective materials identified.

    The quantities and qualities of materials that have been delivered as per order are checked and inconsistencies are dealt with in accordance with organisational procedures.

    Methods of material preparation are discussed to ensure quality products. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    Other aspects of material preparation include but are not limited to the properties of metals, furnaces for non-ferrous smelting.

    The appropriate tool is selected for purposes of achieving accuracy for a given scenario.
