PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will acquire the knowledge to understand the historical development of horse breeds and the relationship between certain horse breeds and their characteristics. The learner will need to prove competence in identifying breed types for certain purposes.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Tracing the historic development of horse breeds.
  • Identifying horse breed characteristics.
  • Assessing the suitability of the breed for the selected purpose.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Trace the historic development of horse breeds (at least one breed per category). 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Horse breed categories include, but are not limited to:
  • Warm blood, hot blood, cold blood horses or ponies [28 breeds].

    The area of origin of the breed is selected in terms of the given case study. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Chronology of the breed is stated in terms of the given case study.

    Influences of the development of the breed are stated in terms of the given case study. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify horse breed characteristics (at least one of the 28 breeds).

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the Unit Standard.

    Identify and solve problems associated with breeds of horses being used for the inappropriate purpose by employing responsible decision-making and creative thinking.

    Understand that working effectively with others as a member of a team, group or role-players to identify characteristics of a horse in relationship to its breed. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING 
    Understand that organising and managing oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively are characteristics of an individual who works with equines.

    Communicate effectively using appropriate modes of oral and/or written persuasion in dealing with all internal and external role-players to correctly assign a horse to a particular purpose based on its breed and characteristics.

  • Assessors must be registered as assessors with a relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors must be in possession of a relevant qualification at a minimum of National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 6.
