Learners credited with this unit standard are able to fulfil a supervisory role in looking after stud horses in a stabled situation.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Organising daily stud farm routine.
  • Monitoring availability of stud consumables.
  • Supervising stud farm feeding programme.
  • Maintaining stud farm inventory.
  • Maintaining stud farm records.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Organise daily stud farm routine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Daily maintenance schedule for horses, stables and surroundings is developed in accordance with stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Maintenance scheduled activities include, but are not limited to:
  • Mucking out, grooming, feeding, exercise, cleaning and maintenance of tack, stables, surroundings and equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Daily stud farm schedule is implemented in accordance with specific requirements and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Daily scheduled activities include, but is not limited to:
  • Preparing mares, teasing mares, covering mares and preparing stallions.

    Horses that require exercise are prepared at the designated time and place in accordance with stud farm procedures.

    Monitor availability of stud consumables.

    Required feed is calculated, ordered and stored in accordance with maximum storage times as recommended by feed suppliers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stocks of stable bedding are monitored and new supplies are ordered to ensure a constant supply in accordance with stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stable bedding includes, but is not limited to cater for:
  • In foal mares, foaling mares, mares with foals at foot, open mares and stallions.

    Equipment is examined for condition and is repaired or replaced in accordance with stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment includes, but is not limited to:
  • Crib feeders, dummy mares, crush, hobbles and pads.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stud farm consumables are monitored and new supplies are ordered with sufficient lead time to ensure a constant supply in accordance with stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Consumables includes, but is not limited to:
  • Disinfectants, lubricants, bandages, colostrums and supplements.

    Supervise stud farm feeding programme.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stud farm feeding programme is planned for routine and individual horse needs in accordance with availability of feed and stud farm procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Feeding is supervised for routine and individual horse needs in accordance with stud farm feeding programme plan and stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Feeding needs includes, but is not limited to:
  • Mares in first trimester, mares in last trimester, weanlings, young stock and stallions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Feeding and digestive problems are recognised and remedial actions are implemented in accordance with stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Problems include, but are not limited to:
  • Whole grains in faeces, excessive salivation, lack of appetite, loss of condition, slow laboured chewing, bad breath, pain or swelling in jaw, head tossing, quidding, elevated heart rate and increased temperature.

    Feeding supplements are administered according to stud farm policy and procedures.

  • Name, age, breeding, height, sex, condition on arrival, colour, markings, owner, owner contact details, inoculations and equipment.

    Stud farm consumables are recorded and controlled in accordance with stud farm procedures.

    Individual horse details are recorded and stored in accordance with stud farm policy.

    Passports and registration papers are filed and details recorded in accordance with stud farm policy and procedures.

    Breeding details for stud mares are recorded and filed in accordance with stud farm procedures.

    Breeding record details include, but are not limited to:
  • Mare's cycle, daily teasing records, test results (Dourine), veterinary treatments, foaling details, mating details, routine treatments such as farriery, worming and movements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Breeding details for stud stallions are recorded and filed in accordance with stud farm policy and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Breeding record details include, but are not limited to:
  • Mares covered/dates, results of semen evaluation, conception rates, nomination contracts, lease agreements, routine treatments such as farriery and worming.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Foaling records are maintained in accordance with stud farm policy and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Foaling record details include, but are not limited to:
  • Last breeding date, gestation period, date of foaling, waxed, first signs of foaling, time water broke, time mare delivered, foaling presentation and ease, time placenta expelled, weight of placenta, placenta complete, veterinary assistance, udder development and maternal instinct.

    Records of foals are maintained in accordance with stud farm policy. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Information to be recorded includes, but is not limited to:
  • Sex of foal, birth weight, umbilical cord length, condition at birth, suck reflex present, time mare foaled down, time foal nursed, time foal passed meconium, umbilical cord treated, TPR, colour and markings.
