PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is about trimming and shoeing equine feet as planned through determining the farriery requirements. Before fitting a new set of shoes the wear of the old shoes are to be studied. When trimming and shoeing a previously unshod horse, the wear pattern of the hooves must be studied. Wear provides valuable information regarding any defects of conformation or abnormalities of gait and any faults in the previous preparation of the foot or in the fitting of the shoe.

The purpose of shoeing a horse is to preserve and maintain the action of the horse. The qualifying learner will need to be capable of shoeing all types of equine feet.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Removing shoes and assessing wear.
  • Trimming feet.
  • Fitting shoes.
  • Clenching and finishing the shoeing process.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Remove shoes and assess wear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A working position is adopted and shoes are removed using appropriate techniques and tools to maintain personal and equine safety and comfort. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The feet of the equine are cleaned and examined to establish the wear pattern in relation to trimming and shoeing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The client is advised on the need to adjust the footcare and shoeing plan in terms of the state of wear of the old shoe. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Trim feet. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The hooves are trimmed and balanced using appropriate tools and techniques to maintain personal and equine safety and comfort according to the agreed footcare plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The footcare plan is amended in consultation with the client in relation to conditions in the feet which were not previously identifiable. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Fit shoes.

  • Concave, plain stamped and flat fullered.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Shoes for fore and hind feet are selected in terms of the type, material and size as per the shoeing plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Selected shoes are shaped according to ancillary features as determined by the footcare and shoeing plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Shoes are fitted to fore and hind feet using appropriate tools and techniques to maintain personal and equine safety and comfort. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Final adjustments are made in relation to the shape and size of the shoe and hoof. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Clench and finish the shoeing process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The shoe is attached safely and securely in the correct position according to the footcare and shoeing plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The hoof is clenched and finished according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The finished job is assessed and the equine is trotted up to assess soundness of the shoeing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The client is informed of the actions taken and advised on the equines future foot care requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the Unit Standard.
