PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for learners who apply knowledge and skills to plan, conduct and evaluate operational duties by making use of horses. The learner will also be able to demonstrate an understanding of command and control, assess accommodation while conducting rural operational duties and evaluate equipment for rural operational duties. They will also know how to assess aspects to be taken into account during rural operational duties and evaluate the logistical and other means of support.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of command and control.
  • Assessing accommodation for horses while conducting rural operational duties.
  • Evaluating equipment for rural operational duties.
  • Assessing aspects to be taken into account during rural operational duties.
  • Evaluate the logistical and other means of support.

    Range of rural operational duties include, but is not limited to: borderline patrols and investigation of stock theft.

    Methods of planning operational duties are evaluated in terms of the nature of the operation.

    Components of the operational plan are assessed in terms of the operational objectives. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components include, but are not limited to:
  • Welfare and safety of horse and rider, maintenance of horses, and maintenance of related equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Requirements related to a main base area facility in which horses are kept are described in the absence of stables. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Requirements related to overnight facilities for horses in the absence of stables are identified that include all aspects suited to the needs of the horses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Requirements for accommodation of riders are assessed in terms of the purpose of patrols and their specific needs.

    Evaluate equipment for rural operational duties.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The dress codes for horses and riders are assessed in terms of the purpose of the operational duties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment used by riders is assessed for suitability in line with the aim of the duties. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment includes, but are not limited to:
  • Water bottle, torch, first aid kit, sleeping bags, poncho, groundsheets and grooming kit.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Requirements for saddlery are evaluated in terms of their suitability for border patrols and duties. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Saddlery requirements include, but are not limited to:
  • Saddles, bridles, halter with lead rope, blankets and saddle bags.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The caring for, cleaning of and maintenance of saddlery is evaluated in terms of suitability to the nature of border line patrols. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Identify aspects to be taken into account during rural operational duties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Ration requirements are assessed in terms of suitability and sufficiency for the horse and rider. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Requirements regarding rest periods are evaluated in terms of the horse's abilities and the type of patrol conducted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The duration and speed of patrols are determined as appropriate for the relevant environmental factors. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Environmental factors include, but are not limited to:
  • Terrain, temperature, wind and humidity.

    Relevant fire and private property regulations are described in terms of their implications in patrols. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Methods of maintaining stable equipment and expendable items are evaluated in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Evaluate logistical and other means of support.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The role and functions of farriers and veterinarians are evaluated in line with the need for specialised assistance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Methods of transporting detainees during rural operational duties are assessed in terms of organizational policies and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Organizational policies and procedures include, but are not limited to: calling for immediate assistance for transportation and using a horse to transport detainees.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The need for transportation of horses is described in terms of the patrolling plan. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the Unit Standard.
