PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be able to prepare themselves for riding a horse on a sand track on their own and in pairs. They will also have an understanding of how the sand track affects the pace of the horse while being exercised.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the effect of sand on pace.
  • Riding at various paces on sand.
  • Exercising horses in pairs.

    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the effect of sand on pace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different types of sand used on training tracks are described in terms of their purpose and differences. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Training tracks may include but are not limited to wood chips, beach sand, medium river sand, and visco-track sand.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The depth of sand is described in terms of how it impacts on pace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effects of wet or dry sand are described in terms of how it impacts on pace. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Ride at various paces on sand. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different paces which may be ridden at are explained according to international standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Paces may include but is not limited to walk, trot, canter, strong canter, half pace, three-quarter pace and gallop.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Basic safety equipment for the horse and rider is fitted and used before riding. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment may include but is not limited to safety vest, skull cap, goggles, riding boots, protective clothing, girth, surcingle, stirrups are adjusted.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety precautions are applied before and during riding at pace in accordance with industry accepted protocols. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Each of the different paces are performed on a horse on a sand track in accordance with acceptable procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Exercise horses in pairs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety precautions when riding in pairs are explained in terms of potential problems and methods of resolving them. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reasons why horses are exercised in pairs are explained in accordance with riding school philosophies. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reasons may include but are not limited to trial, schooling, and give confidence.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Riding in pairs is conducted in accordance with good riding practices at all paces and on track. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A report on the ride is developed and communicated to an authorised individual according to worksite procedures.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
