PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be able to have an understanding of the stable and un-mounted vices in equines and methods of identifying and treating them. They will be able to assist in preventing stable and un-mounted vices.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining typical vices in equines.
  • Identify and prevent stable and un-mounted vices in equines.
  • Preventing stable and un-mounted vices from occurring.

    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Stable and un-mounted vices may include wind sucking, crib biting, weaving, box walking, kicking, biting, rug tearing and door banging.

    Explain typical vices in equines.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stable and un-mounted vices are listed in tabular form. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Each stable vice is explained with examples of the behaviour of the equine. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stable vice includes but not limited to box walking, weaving crip biting and rug tearing.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Stable and un-mounted vices are recognised in given case studies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Common causes of stable and un-mounted vices are explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Common causes may include but are not limited to boredom, stress and mimicking.

    Identify and prevent with stable and un-mounted vices.

    The methods of identifying and preventing stable and un-mounted vices are explained in order. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Existing stable vices are identified in a case study. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Techniques to prevent existing vices are implemented for each existing stable vice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The technique implemented is assessed in order to establish success or failure thereof. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Success or failure of implemented techniques is reported according worksite procedures.

    Prevent stable and un-mounted vices from occurring.

    Preventative measures to stop stable and un-mounted vices occurring are explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Measures may include but are not limited to increased time out of stable, more roughage, and more frequent meal times and isolation of problem equines.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Methods to implement preventative measures are explained using case studies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The implementation of preventative measures is assessed in order to establish success or failure thereof. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A report is submitted to authorised individuals according to worksite procedures.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
