PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard in combination with other relevant guiding standards will be able to conduct a limited guided experience on horseback for up to one day (provided that staff to client ratio does not exceed 1 to 6) or to assist a Ride Leader on longer rides. The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to practice as an Assistant Ride Leader in a horse trail operation as a tourist guide in situations that require this level of competency.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Conducting a guided horse trail.
  • Managing rest stops during the trail.
  • Concluding the horse trail.

  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Develop riding proficiency at NQF Level 4.
  • Prepare horse and client for trail ride of up to one day at NQF Level 4.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Conduct a guided horse trail. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The destination is determined and progress maintained according to experience of riders and terrain to ensure minimum stress or discomfort to riders and horses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Group dynamics are monitored continually to determine mental and physical comfort of riders and horses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Mental or physical discomfort of riders and horses are alleviated in accordance with safety requirements and worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hazardous situations or actions related to riders and horses are identified and managed in accordance with safety requirements and worksite procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Hazards include, but are not limited to:
  • Unsafe actions by riders, lack of confidence with horse, misbehaving horse, other horses misbehaving; environmental hazards and obstacles.

    Motivation and instructions to the group are provided in relation to group dynamics and the context of the situation.

    Dismounting of riders are supervised to maintain comfort and safety of riders and horses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Horses are restrained and saddlery is managed in accordance with safety and worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Rider and horse comfort requirements are attended to according to worksite procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Rider requirements include, but are not limited to:
  • Refreshments, smoking, water safety [drinking, swimming], ablution facilities, rest and rubbish disposal.

    Horse requirements include, but are not limited to:
  • Feed, water, rest and protection from adverse weather.

    Preparation to resume the trail is completed for riders and horses in accordance with worksite procedures.

    Conclude the horse trail.

    Dismounting is supervised and rider debriefing is carried out in accordance with worksite procedures.

  • Management of discomfort or injury, return business, procedures for complaints and farewell.

    Horses are tended and trail gear is accounted for in accordance with worksite procedures.

    Documentation is completed according to legislative requirements and worksite procedures.

  • Incident report and log book.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
