PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard will acquire the competencies to prepare both the selected horses and the clients for a trail ride of up to one day. Qualifying learners will be able to prepare for a trail ride for the duration of a day by supervising the resources required for a safe and stimulating ride, including the completion of the necessary documentation.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Supervising the completion of documentation for a horse trail of up to one day.
  • Selecting and preparing a horse for a horse trail.
  • Preparing clients for a horse trail of up to one day.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Supervise the completion of documentation for a horse trail of up to one day.

    Safety and legal requirements are explained in relation to conducting a horse trail. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Required documentation is completed according to worksite procedures.

  • Previous experience, height, weight, confidence and age.

    Pre-assessment of client's riding ability is conducted according to worksite procedures.

    Select and prepare a horse for a horse trail.

    Horse is selected according to assessed client requirements and trail conditions to limit stress and discomfort.

    Selection criteria for horse includes, but is not limited to:
  • Fitness, soundness and health.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Horse is geared up for the requirements of the horse trail to enable control by the client and comfort for both the horse and client. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare clients for a horse trail of up to one day. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Client check of clothing and equipment is conducted to ensure fitment in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and worksite safety procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment includes, but is not limited to:
  • Safety helmet, stirrup iron size and sun protection.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Mounting assistance is provided according to standard industry practice to minimise stress or injury to horses or riders. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Saddlery is adjusted according to standard industry practice to ensure comfort and control for the client and maximum comfort for the horse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A pre trip brief is conducted in accordance with worksite procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Pre-trip briefing includes, but is not limited to:
  • Ride etiquette, riding position, riding skills, introduction of guide(s) and other trail participants, guidelines and rules of the trail, description of the trail, rider's personal comfort, assistance during the trail, environmental care code and waste management.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the Specific Outcomes of the Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the Unit Standard.
