PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner credited with this unit standard will be able to carry out procedures to tease a mare in preparation for serving and complete teasing records.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Restraining the mare in preparation for teasing.
  • Presenting the mare to the teaser.
  • Interpreting and recording the behaviour of the mare whilst being teased.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Restrain the mare in preparation for teasing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Methods of teasing are described in terms of the reasons for the method used on the stud farm. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Methods include, but is not limited to:
  • Paddock, individual, group, crush, teasing yard and teasing board.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Mare is caught and restrained in preparation for presentation to the teaser stallion in accordance with standard industry safety practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The selected teasing method to be used is assessed in accordance with safety procedures and stud farm procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Present the mare to the teaser.

  • Wet mare, dry mare and maiden mare.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Mare is led to the teaser and presented to ensure teasing in accordance with stud farm and safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Behavioural signs of a mare in oestrous are identified and scored according to stud farm policy and reported to the stud farm management. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Exceptions to normal oestrous behaviour in shy mares and wet mares are described in accordance with displayed behaviour. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Interpret and record the behaviour of the mare whilst being teased.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The teaser is restrained and presented to the mare in accordance with standard industry safety practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Restraints include, but is not limited to:
  • Bridle and rearing bit.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Teaser is encouraged to tease the mare to allow the display of the stage within her oestrous cycle in accordance with standard industry safety practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Teaser encouragement includes, but is not limited to:
  • In hand to individual mare, in paddock and behind teasing board.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A mare's teasing record is explained in relation to details and meaning of the symbols used. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Details include, but is not limited to:
  • Mare's personal details, breeding history, date arrived, date served, date foaled, heat, hot on, going off and off heat.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Results of teasing are recorded on the teasing sheet according to stud farm procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
