PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will be equipped to school and ride a novice horse over undulating terrain and obstacles. Knowledge of mounted vices and related remedial techniques will form the basis for developing riding proficiency.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating an independent seat on a novice horse.
  • Schooling a novice horse.
  • Recognising mounted vices.
  • Explaining remedial techniques.

    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an independent seat on the flat and over obstacles. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Learners wishing to do Riding for the Diabled, Vaulting, Driving and Western are exempted from jumping over obstacles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Schooling movements are demonstrated according to internationally accepted standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Schooling movements include, but are not limited to:
  • Basic lateral work, rein back and counter canter.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The execution of the movements are evaluated according to internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Jumping is demonstrated over a set course of obstacles up to 1m height according to internationally accepted standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cource includes between 6 and 8 obstacles.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The jumping round is evaluated according to internationally accepted standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    School a novice horse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles of basic schooling for a novice horse are explained in a chronological order. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Schooling and exercise movements are demonstrated on a novice horse in an enclosed area. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Movements include, but are not limited to:
  • Walk, trot, canter, halt on a straight line and on a 20m circle, transitions and change of rein.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The horse is assessed in relation to the relevant movements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A training programme for the horse assessed is developed according to internationally accepted standards.

    Aspects of a training programme includes, but is not limited to:
  • Suggested exercises; repetitions and timeframe.

    A variety of humane training concepts are explained according to internationally accepted practices.

    Common mounted vices are described according to the behaviour indicators. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Common mounted vices includes, but are not limited to:
  • Bucking, rearing, napping, jibbing, fly jumping, spinning, shying, bolting, biting and kicking.

    Humane corrective techniques are identified that are suitable for correcting the applicable mounted vice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of not addressing common mounted vices are explained in terms of the behaviour indicators and future behaviour of the horse. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain remedial techniques.

    Potential remedial needs are identified according to common signs and symptoms.

    Consequences of not addressing remedial needs are explained in terms of ongoing behaviour of the horse. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the Unit Standard.
