PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner credited with this unit standard will be able to carry out procedures to prepare a mare for serving and hold a mare for service. This will entail preventing the spread of disease on a stud farm; fitting restraints if required to minimise injury to the mare and stallion and holding the mare for serving and restraining the foal.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Preventing the spread of disease on a stud farm.
  • Fitting restraints to the mare and stallion, if necessary, to minimise injury.
  • Holding the mare for serving and restraining the foal. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Equine welfare at NQF Level 3.
  • Restrain an equine at NQF Level 2.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prevent the spread of disease on a stud farm. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Ways in which the reproductive organs may come into contact with bacteria is explained in relation to stud farm conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Preventative action is taken in relation to the spread of contamination according to standard industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The mare is prepared and cleaned according to stud farm procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The mare's tail is bandaged for serving according to standard industry practice. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Fit restraints to the mare and stallion to minimise injury.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Types of restraints are described according to their purpose and action. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Restraints include, but is not limited to:
  • Serving hobbles, hind leg boots, neck twitch, stallion bridle and neck protector.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Leg restraints are humanely fitted to the mare to fulfil its stated function according to standard industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Neck twitch is applied to fulfil its stated function according to standard industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Restraints are selected appropriately for a given situation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Hold the mare for serving and restrain the foal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Foal is restrained to prevent injury during the serving process according to standard industry practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Considerations in restraining the foal includes, but is not limited to:
  • Restrained foal must be restrained within sight and sound of the mare, allow sufficient movement without causing injury to the foal.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The lead rope is used to prevent injury during the process according to standard industry practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Parties to be considered includes, but is not limited to:
  • Foal, mare, handler and personnel.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of inappropriate application of restraining techniques and devices are explained in terms of the impact on the serving process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Restraint removal is explained in relation to the type and function according to standard industry practice. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.

  • Powers of Seizure Regulation 468 as contained in the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
