PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for learners in the safety in society environment and more specially the law enforcement environment that will be able to utilize a horse for ceremonial proceedings. This unit standard will enable learners to use a horse for ceremonial proceedings, demonstrate the use of lance drills and demonstrate the use of an equine during ceremonial proceedings.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Explaining the use of horses for ceremonial proceedings.
  • Demonstrating the use of a horse in lance drills.
  • Demonstrating the use of a horse during ceremonial proceedings.

    Explain the use of horses for ceremonial proceedings.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Types of ceremonial proceedings are described in terms of how equines can be used. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ceremonial proceedings include, but are not limited to:
  • Escorting, ceremonial parades, state funerals and image building.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of command and control over the equine are explained in terms of maintaining order during the ceremonial proceedings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The planning and preparation required for using equines in ceremonial proceedings is described in terms of facilities and resources. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of specific actions during ceremonial proceedings is described in terms of the effect on the proceeding.

    Actions include, but are not limited to:
  • Walking and sitting trot.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The impact of incorrect use of the lance is evaluated in terms of safety precautions for horse and rider.

    Ways of controlling the lance are described in relation to the horse and rider for various situations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ways of controlling the lance includes, but are not limited to:
  • The position in relation to the horse (always right hand side of horse) and the removal from lance bucket.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ways of controlling the horse during the handling of the lance are explained in terms of relevant safety measures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The handing over and removing of the lance is conducted safely in a controlled environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Positions include, but are not limited to:
  • Sit at ease, brace up, attention and stand at ease.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The lance is used in performing the National Salute in accordance with accepted protocols.

  • Drawing and returning of the lance.

    Formations used during ceremonial proceedings are described in terms of their uses and purpose. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ceremonial proceedings include, but are not limited to:
  • Escorts, funerals and image building (such as roman rides, gymkhana and musical rides), formations in front of official residence and use of specialized equipment and accessories.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Protocols regarding guests are explained in terms of the actions to be taken. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Protocols include, but are not limited to:
  • Before, during and after the arrival of guests.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The procedures of ceremonial proceedings are explained in terms of the applications on the specific ceremony.

    The use of specialised equipment during ceremonial proceedings are explained in terms of their purpose and significance.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
