PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for people who wish to apply riding proficiency on trained and novice horses and ride in a competent manner according to acceptable international standards.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Understand the importance of and apply an independent seat; schooling and bringing on novice horses. They will also be capable of being in control of a horse on the road and leading a group of riders in the country side.

    Learner accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating and maintaining an independent seat at all paces on a trained horse.
    > Range: Walk, trot, canter and gallop.
  • Demonstrate the ability of bringing on, exercising and schooling a horse.
  • Explaining and demonstrating a jumping seat.
    > Range: Obstacles are limited to ones up to 85cm in height.
  • Demonstrating the ability to lead a group of riders in the countryside.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Equine handling at NQF Levels 1 and 2.
  • Riding Proficiency at NQF Levels 1and 2.
  • Equine Welfare at NQF Level 2.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate and maintain an independent seat at all paces on a trained horse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Sitting trot is demonstrated in the saddle without using the stirrups. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The seat at the canter is demonstrated in the saddle without using the stirrups. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Riding at a gallop in the saddle is demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Basic schooling and bringing on of horses is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles of basic schooling of horses are explained in a chronological order. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Effective schooling and exercise movements are demonstrated on a trained horse in an enclosed area. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Schooling and exercise movements includes shoulder-in; serpentines; circles; upward and downward transitions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The way of going of the horse is assessed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A training programme for the horse assessed is described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A training programme includes but not limited to suggested exercises and timeframe.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain and demonstrate a jumping seat. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The method of the jumping seat is explained in a chronological manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A jumping seat is demonstrated according to internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Risks associated with not applying the jumping seat are identified and mitigated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Riding over 85cm jumps is demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Lead a group of riders in the countryside. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Leading a group of riders in the countryside is explained in a chronological way according to international accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The consequences of not leading a group of riders in a safe and efficient manner are explained in a given case study. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Remedial techniques to be applied when faced with dangerous situations when leading a ride in the open are explained with examples. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of NQF Level 5 Qualification in the equestrian field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant Qualification and ETQA guidelines.
