PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to gather the required information to complete a community profile and to go out into the community and carry the processes to complete and analyse a community profile.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating understanding of a community profile within a given community context.
  • Demonstrating understanding of protocols to be followed in conducting a community profile.
  • Conducting a community profile.
  • Analysing the community profile using a logical and systematic framework. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner is competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The community development practitioner will be working under supervision.
  • This is a baseline assessment of a specific community that impacts on further development initiatives.
  • A community profile refers to an overall understanding of the structure, history, institutions, resource base and quality and quantity of infrastructure and services that shape the livelihoods of households in a given community.

    The need to conduct a community profile is described in terms of it's purpose, relevance and benefits.

    The steps to conduct a community profile are explained in a logical and appropriate sequence. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A plan is developed to conduct a community profile that includes all the steps, deliverables, timeframes, and areas of responsibility. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate understanding of protocols to be followed in conducting a community profile. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Protocol may include but is not limited to indigenous knowledge systems, cultural and social norms and community structures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different ways of approaching and engaging with a specific community, especially for the first time, are identified and discussed in terms of appropriateness and cultural sensitivity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The key role-players within a selected community are identified in terms of their relevance, key areas of involvement/expertise, role and responsibility. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Protocols are identified and followed in respect of the selected community context. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Conduct a community profile.

    Data for the community profile is gathered through the use of acceptable tools and techniques for the specific situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Data is gathered in accordance with the prescribed research plan.

    Deviations and incomplete sections in the research plan are identified and explained in terms of how they will be addressed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Analyse the community profile using a logical and systematic framework.

    The draft profile is validated with the key role-players within an acceptable time frame.

    The community profile is presented to stakeholders and/or role-players in accordance with organisational requirements.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the relevant ETQA.
